Per Grieg Jr: "Now it is time to pass the baton to a new generation."

Grieg Seafood founder will step down from the board

Grieg Seafood founder Per Grieg Jr. is to step down from the board, he has announced.

Grieg Jr., a former chief executive and chair of the Norwegian salmon farmer, will resign at the annual general meeting on June 4.

“It has been a true privilege to develop and lead Grieg Seafood throughout these years,” said Grieg Jr., who has spent 33 years developing the company.

“I am lucky to have worked with many fantastic colleagues in both Norway and abroad. I am proud to have played a role in developing Norway’s second largest export industry from local communities along the coast. Now it is time to pass the baton to a new generation. I will be rooting for Grieg Seafood and the salmon farming industry from the sidelines.”

Ships to salmon

Grieg Jr. went from shipping to the salmon farming industry in 1992, when he co-founded the sales company Grieg Seafood Salmon. From acquiring a stake in small salmon farms in Rogaland in 1993, Grieg Seafood has grown into a company that expects to harvest 84 000 tons of salmon in 2025. The company has a market value of approximately NOK 7.7 billion but has recently struggled financially.

The company has paused investment in its salmon farms in British Columbia, Canada, in the wake of the Canadian government’s announcement last year that it will ban open net pen farms in the province from mid-2029.

It has also run out of money to further develop farming operations in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, where it has exclusive use.

Focused on Norway

In Norway, it has had biological problems in Finnmark, but better performance in Rogaland. It is continuing operations in Canada but is primarily focused on restoring profitability in Norway.

“Our top operational focus is restoring profitability in Finnmark, aiming to mirror performance of Rogaland. As we continue to execute on our transformation agenda, we plan to intensify and dedicate our focus to financially driven initiatives,” interim chief executive Nina Grieg stated in the company’s Integrated Annual Report 2024, published last month.

Nina Grieg has been the acting CEO of Grieg Seafood since March 2025, following the departure of Andreas Kvame after 10 years in the role. The board of directors has an ongoing process to hire a permanent CEO.
