The Version 6 update, due in the near future, follows what Steinsvik says has been significant sales growth for the Mercatus package, including adoption of the system by Norwegian salmon farmer Nordlaks.

“So far this year, Steinsvik has secured agreements with a number of farmers. We were especially pleased to get Nordlaks as a customer,” said Steinar Haveland Midtbø, head of Mercatus in Steinsvik, in a press release.

Jørn Torsvik: Has more than 50 software system developers.

“Knowledge is the key to profitable aquaculture and the farmers have a strong focus on exploiting their data. We in Steinsvik are in the unique position that in our systems we let farmers collect detailed information about feeding, environmental data, treatment history, fish behaviour and all other events in the lifecycle of the fish. Data from roe to slaughter, both on history and budgeting, are collected and analysed in Mercatus Farmer.”

Nordlaks spokesman Tommy Hansen said the company had been using its own in-house system for a long time but found it increasingly challenging to extract the reports and key performance indicators required in a straightforward way.

After trialling several options Nordlaks chose Mercatus because of ease of use and the competence of the employees in Steinsvik.

Jørn Torsvik, the new head of software in Steinsvik, said: “The aquaculture industry is only at the beginning of a digitalisation era with an enormous value creation potential. This is why Steinsvik has more than 50 system developers who work exclusively with software for this industry.”
