Spilled salmon block tunnel after lorry hits wall

Between three to four tonnes of salmon ended up scattered over the road after an articulated lorry carrying the fish hit a tunnel in Norway, ripping open the side and roof of the trailer.

The accident, which happened at around 10pm on Friday, blocked the Stalheim tunnel in Voss municipality for an hour while the fish were cleared, according to a report on Norway’s BA website.

The lorry was carrying 19 tonnes of salmon from the Norwell export company. Fish were scattered for about 300 metres along the tunnel from the entrance, Voss fire service told BA.

Ingrid Kassen, Norwell’s general manager, confirmed that it was the company’s fish loaded on board the trailer.

“We have good insurance on such matters, so this is a good test case. It is now up to us to make the best of the situation,” she told Fish Farming Expert’s Norwegian sister site, Kyst.no.

She pointed out that there were good people on the spot who cleaned up and took care of what was going to save the remaining cargo.

“This has been handled in a good way,” said Kassen.
