Hear how smolt research will aid production

Scientists investigating the impact of new technologies on salmon smolt will discuss their findings to date during a webinar this afternoon.

The Robust Smolt programme researchers will provide an overview of the industry relevance of the project, plus an update on their latest experiments and future plans.

The £2 million three-year study, launched last year, is being led by the Institute of Aquaculture (IoA) at the University of Stirling and involves 14 institutions and organisations.

Sustainability

The goal is to compare the robustness and susceptibility of Atlantic salmon to pathogens when reared in recirculation aquaculture systems (RAS).

The consortium hopes  to provide new knowledge and scientific tools to monitor and enhance farming system efficiency and reliability, fish robustness and health, and sector productivity and sustainability.

The consortium includes the Universities of Aberdeen, Exeter and Edinburgh; the Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science; Mowi; Scottish Sea Farms; the Scottish Salmon Company; Cooke Aquaculture Scotland; Grieg Seafood, BioMar; Pharmaq; the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre; and the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation.

Early career researchers

Professor Herve Migaud, of Stirling’s Institute of Aquaculture, is principal investigator on the project, which is funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Natural Environment Research Council under the UK Aquaculture Initiative, and the Scottish Aquaculture Innovation Centre.

Today’s webinar will be presented by three early career researchers currently employed on the programme - Dr Lynn Chalmers and Dr Mikey Clarkson from the IoA, and Dr Marlene Lorgen-Ritchie from the School of Biological Sciences, University of Aberdeen.

The event, part of the ARCH-UK webinar series, begins at 2pm (UK time) and you can register for free here.
