Harvest Results for First Quarter

Last week SalmonChile released their quarterly results of the industry’s sales as of March (see article “Strong Returns of Chilean Salmon exports”, 22.05.07). This week the National Fisheries Service (Sernapesca) released their quarterly results in terms of the industry’s harvest totals. According to a comparative analysis of last year by Aqua.cl, a summary of the results are as follows:

The total harvest of salmonids (Atlantic, coho, rainbow trout) reached 183,000 tons, and 8.5% higher than last year’s first quarter.

Atlantic salmon reached 87,000 tons, 5.5% less than in 2006. From this total, 68,000 tons were from Region 10 and 19,000 tons from Region 11.

Coho salmon reached 36,000 tons, 40% higher than in 2006. From this total, 24,000 tons were from Region 10 and 12,000 tons from Region 11.

Rainbow trout reached 59,000 tons, and 8% higher than 2006. From this total, 42,000 tons were from Region 10 and 17,000 tons from Region 11.

Chile’s principal aquaculture resources by species and harvest percentage:

Atlantic salmon: 35%, Rainbow trout: 24%, Chilean mussel: 13%
