Wild salmon board concerned about recent escape

The most recent breach of containment took place on the 29th of January, with a total of 4671 (2.2kg sized) trout escaping from Dawnfresh Farming Ltd in Etive-Ardchattan Bay in Argyll.

Last year, Dawnfresh acquired the fish farming company Scot Trout & Salmon, which had been criticised due to other escape incidents from the site in 2008. Roger Brook; Chairman of the Argyll District Salmon Fishery Board told FishfarmingXpert that it did not seem as if the new ownership had led to improvements in relations to escapes:

“The Argyll District Salmon Fisheries Board are very concerned about this most recent reported escape from this farm location. At this stage there does not appear to be any significant improvement in the containment record of the farm following the relatively recent change in ownership.

“Our concerns about the ability of the sector as a whole to retain their fish within their farm units remain and we are increasingly worried as to the damage escapes may be causing to important ecosystems and wild fish populations in Argyll and elsewhere on the west coast of Scotland,” Brook said.
