US boost for Norwegian salmon
For the first time in 15 years, 2009 will be a year of drop in the supply of Atlantic salmon. Expected decrease from Chile is more than 50 percent. From 394 000 tons to 196 tons. The other major producer, Norway, expects to rise the production by 12 percent in 2009. In volume this represents around 80 000 tons.
Chile is the biggest supplier of salmon into the US market, and already US retailers are desperat looking for alternatives. The most likely option is to buy more from Norway.
- We already receive several enquiries every day, says Cermaqs CFO, Steven Rafferty to FishfarmingXpert. He expects many more to to come. He believs this will boost the demand for Norwegian salmon.
