According to the Scottish Salmon Producers’ Organisation (SSPO) it is forecast that the global market for Atlantic salmon will have an undersupply of 190,000 tonnes in 2010 as the output from Chile, up until recently the world’s second largest producer of Atlantic salmon, has declined during 2009.

Scott Landsburgh, Chief Executive of Scottish Salmon Producers ' Organisation, told FishfarmingXpert that the market prospects for Scottish salmon continues to be favourable:

“Salmon farmers have worked hard to stimulate, sustain and satisfy the increasing demand over the last few years. With the majority of UK retail outlets supporting and promoting salmon farmed in Scotland and a consistent high demand from overseas, Scotland ’s salmon farmers continue to play a vital role in supplying healthy, nutritious and convenient seafood.

“Whilst continuing to emphasise quality, health, provenance and environmental sustainability, the industry has expressed a desire to the Scottish Government for sustainable development to capitalise on the predicted increase in demand for responsibly farmed salmon in 2010 and beyond,” he said.
