Number of salmon companies would be reduced by half
Moreover, negative returns in several firms, an international economic crisis and sanitary and environmental modifications implemented by the Chilean government need to be added to this conjunction of discouraging situations.
According to the financial journal Estrategia, this scenario will trigger a new consolidation period in the Chilean salmon industry which should reduce the number of companies to a half.
This process would start by the end of this year with mergers, acquisitions and companies going public (listed in the local stock exchange). Meanwhile, this situation would be deepened next year.
These are some of the most expected moves in the coming months:
- Mainstream Chile, local subsidiary of the Norwegian giant Cermaq ASA, is in conversations to acquire Cultivos Marinos Chiloé;
- Trusal and Granja Marina Tornagaleones would be interested in acquisitions and mergers. The Peruvian group Brescia, the Norwegian holding Austevoll Seafood ASA and the Chilean groups Angelini and Luksic could be counterparts in those transactions; and
- Acuinova, the local subsidiary of the Spanish group Pescanova would go public with up to 49 percent of its property and expecting to raise funds for US$ 58 million.
