Mascato expects triple revenues with Blue Shell
The Mascato group just keeps getting better at what they set out to do in Chile in 2002. They were the first to establish a modern processing plant for mussels on the island of Chiloé, Chile’s main mussel farming region (See Mascato group investing strongly in Chilean mussels, 12.10.07), and Blue Shell is an extension of the experience and success they have gained in mussel processing and distribution. Blue Shell is also owned in part by Bantry Bay Seafoods of Ireland, a company specialized in value-added seafood. Although the official unveiling of the Blue Shell’s new processing plant wasn’t until October, the company has been in operation since April. By the closure of 2007 they will have produced 1,800 net tons with earnings of US$ 5.5 million. And according to general manager Eduraro Lloves, for next year he expects to step production up to 5,000 tons, which should generate sales of US$ 12 million.
