Trout giant set to expand
The largest producer of rainbow trout in the US is constructing a brand new broodstock facility.
Based in Idaho, Clear Springs Foods has been farming rainbow trout since 1966. Today, the company produces about 30 million pounds of rainbow trout annually, making it the biggest producer in the States. And plans to complete a new broodstock facility by 2017 will help the company consolidate this position.
Currently, Clear Springs is capable of producing more than 80 million eggs a year; however, the new facility will give the company more control, according to the company's CEO, Larry Cope. "The new and larger facility will give us additional stability in our seed stock so that we have product every week of the year," he said at Seafood Expo North America.
Another goal for the company is to continue the push to distribute more fresh and value-added trout products throughout the US.
