Price plateau predicted
Producers can expect salmon prices to remain at their current, impressively high level, according to a senior seafood analyst.
Salmon prices rose to an average of NOK 49.45/kg in week 49 – up NOK 1.77/kg compared to the week before, according Akvafakta. Salmon of 4-5kg, which were the biggest export category, averaged NOKK 50.02 kroner per kilo – meaning that farmers have been earning an average of NOK 15-20 for every kilo of fish produced.
Swedbank analyst Marius Gaard told kyst.no: “Prices will probably stay around these level – the euro is strong, that the supply is low and it’s the right season."
He also argues that it will be a while before the high price drives away customers: “The price regulates itself, it is not the farmers who say that the price should be 50, it is the customers…although the price will, of course, come down eventually.
