King of fish reigns supreme

Salmon has surpassed shrimp as the world’s most traded seafood, according to a report published in the Financial Times.

The FT article claims that, in terms of value, salmon sales overtook shrimp for the first time in 2013 and, if preliminary FAO estimates are correct, in 2015 salmon accounted for roughly 20% of global seafood trade, while shrimp accounted for closer to 15%.=

The versatility of salmon-related products and the problems the shrimp industry has faced with disease issues, such as EMS, are largely credited with the change in fortunes.

Overall, the international trade in seafood fell from $144 billion in 2014 to $130 billion last year, with the comparative economic malaise in the likes of China, Brazil and Russia being blamed for the softening market.
