Order pipeline keeps flowing for water monitoring firm

Norwegian aquaculture company Fishbase Group has enhanced its ability to monitor water quality in its recirculating aquaculture facility by buying equipment and a data service from Danish company Blue Unit.

It brings the number of fish farms using Blue Unit’s technology to 23 worldwide, with Norway the largest market.

Blue Unit claims to provide the most valid water measuring system available on the market today. It measures the water in a centralised sensor cabinet placed outside the fish tank instead of having sensors in the fish tank. According to Blue Unit, this provides much more reliable data because multiple sensors in the water tend to drift differently.

Easy to use suggestions

“We don’t just sell a smart gadget, and then go on our way. Our aim is to work with the fish farms over time and assist them in what they already do well. We just help them to know the condition of the water as accurately and as quickly as possible,” said Blue Unit founder David Owen, who has a degree in aquaculture from the University of Tasmania and has two decades’ experience working with water quality for RAS.

The Blue Unit lab station comes with a subscription service that converts data into easy to use suggestions that assist fish farm managers in creating a more stable growing environment for the fish and avoid toxic components.

According to Owen, optimising water quality results in a significant increase in welfare, performance and profitability. This means larger fish, better feed conversion, lower stress, early warning against disaster events and ultimately lower costs.

Innovative farm

“As an innovative fish farm, we are always searching for new ways to improve our performance. Blue Unit meets our high standards for monitoring water quality, so it was an obvious choice for us,” said Henry Thomassen, director of Fishbase Group, which is based in Dønna municipality, south of Bodø.

Blue Unit was founded in 2009 by Owen as a consultancy specialising in land-based fish farm water quality management.
