Tilapia top-up for food banks

For every fish taco eaten at the Regal Springs booth at this year's Seafood Expo North America, 5lb of tilapia will be donated to SeaShare, a charity dedicated to supplying healthy seafood to food banks across the US.

After day two of SENA, almost 4000lb has been donated to the charity, which distributes high quality seafood to food banks around the country.

SeaShare works with a large community of fishermen, processors, logistics and distribution partners who want to do their part to help struggling families and individuals. Donations include a wide variety of species, such as salmon, Alaska pollock, pacific white shrimp, rockfish, halibut, catfish and tilapia.

SeaShare provides the framework and logistics that allow a wide range of partners to work together to make large- and small-scale donations possible. By coordinating donations from fishermen with contributions from its cold storage, processing and shipping partners, SeaShare leverages its network to enable the industry to give on a scale that can only be achieved from a collective effort.

Regal Springs is the largest grower of tilapia in the world, raising their fish in Mexico, Honduras and Indonesia. It is the world’s largest vertically integrated aquaculture company and employs over 8,500 people.

Tilapia is the 4th most consumed seafood item in the US, after shrimp, salmon and tuna.
