Salmon Evolution, which farms fish in a hybrid recirculation / flow-through on-land facility in Norway, has successfully completed its second stocking of smolts, it said in a market update today.

The company stocked around 230,000 smolts with an average weight of 125 grams at the facility at Indre Harøy (Harøy Island).

Salmon Evolution reported earlier this month that the volumes for the second stocking had been upsized and include volumes originally intended for release in August.

Good growth

The first stocking took place on March 31 and comprised around 100,000 smolts with an average weight of 300g. At the end of June, the average fish weight was estimated to be around 1.5 kg, with observed individuals well above 2 kg.

The fish are in Phase 1 of the Indre Harøy facility, which will have an annual capacity of 7,900 gutted weight tonnes at steady state. Fully developed, the facility will have an annual capacity of 31,500 gwt.

Salmon Evolution has also entered into a joint venture with seafood giant Dongwon Industries to build and run a 16,800 gwt salmon farm in South Korea.

The company is also searching for opportunities to begin land-based salmon farming in North America.
