The company is located in Dønna, in the Norwegian region of Helgeland.

“We started production in 2014. During this year, we expect to produce approximately one million lumpfish and next year we aim to double it,” says Per Kristian Nordøy, the company’s general manager.

“As far as I know we are the first to adopt recirculation technology for the production of lumpfish on a large scale,” he adds.

This year’s fish are going to be released into farms in the Sør-Troms and Sør-Trøndelag area of Norway, says Nordøy, who emphasizes that “to achieve optimum production, we need good people, good vaccines and roe/ fry, while disease control is probably the most difficult production challenge”.

He believes that the species works well as a cleaner fish, which explains why demand for lumpfish is very high.

“I think they can be an important contributor to keep the lice situation under control - studies show that the fish eat sexually mature lice so there is no doubt that they work,” he concludes.
