Volcano eruption damages fish hatchery
Luciano Rivas, the SalmonChile representative of Chile’s 9th region, the smolt capital of the country’s salmon industry, spoke with Aqua.cl regarding the damages incurred from this week’s dramatic volcano eruption. According to Rivas only one hatchery has been severely damaged, of which he did not wish to disclose the hatchery’s name. Neighbouring hatcheries in the region implemented contingency plans and evacuated as many workers as possible, however as of yesterday the scare and the volcano have ceased to erupt. As for the water quality, constant monitoring shows slight changes in pH and the presence of sulphur in a few nearby hatcheries.
