The volume of Vietnam’s aquaculture exports in November dropped to a 6-month record low of US$373.1 million (~€ 258.4 million), down 22 percent against October, according to the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reports theVietnam Business Finance. Frozen shrimp and catfish were the products that saw the sharpest declines in price to US$35.221 million and US$55 million respectively.

According to Truong Dinh Hoe, general secretary of VASEP, the total volume of Vietnam’s aquaculture exports will continue to fall in the final month of this year. By the end of November, the total value of the country’s aqua exports this year was over US$4.2 billion. But there may be an upside to the picture coming soon, as Vietnam’s seafood exports to Japan may inctrease sharply thanks to tax cuts and tariff exemptions being applied to more than 80 per cent of its agro-fishery exports value to Japan, according to VASEP.

This is one of the results of the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership (AJCEP) Agreement, which came into effect in Japan and some ASEAN countries, including Viet Nam , as of December 1, 2008. The agreement has created favourable conditions for the export of these Vietnamese staples. Viet Nam will work with Japan to establish a cooperative committee with responsibility for addressing problems related to food safety and quality, while Japan will provide assistance to Viet Nam in constructing a seafood facility which meetsinternational food hygiene standards. Japan is currently Vietnam’s largest export market for frozen shrimp, with an estimated turnover of almost 400 million USD, according to VASEP. Numerous Vietnamese seafood exporters have promoted their product ranges in this market. General director of the Sao Ta Food Joint Stock Company (Fimex VN), Duong Ngoc Kim said her company has signed a contract to export 1,000 agricultural products to Japan ’s Toyota Tsusho export company. The company recently exported 20 tonnes of seafood products to Japan , Kim said. (VNA)
