Value of frozen salmon exports up 17%
The Undersecretary of Fisheries recently released this year’s cumulative export report, showing that the frozen product from the aquaculture sector accounted for a volume of 223 thousand tons and US$ 1.1 billion in earnings. This translates into 55% of the total volume of the nation’s frozen fisheries exports, and 79% of the total value. Compared to August of 2006, these results are 15% higher in volume and 17% higher in sales. The primary aquaculture species are, in order of importance: Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, coho salmon, mussels, scallops, king salmon, abalone, oysters and turbot; and the primary export destinations are Japan, the U.S., and Germany. According to Aqua.cl the average price for frozen salmon reached US$ 6 per kilo, slightly below last year’s cumulative average.
