Bosses say the move is necessary for the firm to remain competitive and have told the 166 staff at the Harbour Road factory that up to 13 people could go.

A spokeswoman for the company told the newspaper that workers facing redundancy could be offered other posts within the company.

She said: “Regrettably, we have had to enter consultation with our filleting colleagues at our Kilron factory in Fraserburgh which may result in up to 13 redundancies.

The news comes just weeks after another Broch firm, International Fish Canners, announced plans to cut 60 jobs from its 200-strong workforce. It announced the cuts a month after introducing a three-day working week for its staff on the back of a drop in orders.

The company, which plunged nearly £500,000 into the red in 2007-08, said the job cuts were needed to safeguard its base in the town.
