Cermaq Newfoundland compliance chief elected president of industry body NAIA
Stephanie Synard-McInnis, compliance and sustainability director for salmon farmer Cermaq Newfoundland, has been elected as president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA).
The executive was elected at the annual general meeting of the NAIA held during the Cold Harvest Conference in St John’s, NL, last week.
Ben Normand, technical sales advisor at aquafeed maker Skretting North America, was elected vice-president.
Cermaq acquired Grieg Seafood’s salmon farms in Placentia Bay, and a hatchery in Marystown, both in NL, as part of a £738 million purchase of Grieg’s Canadian and northern Norway assets in December last year.
Science-based development
“I’m honoured to take on the role of president at such an important time for aquaculture in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Synard-McInnis.
“Our sector continues to grow through responsible, science-based development, and NAIA will remain focused on supporting our members, strengthening public understanding, and advancing opportunities for sustainable expansion.”
Sheldon George, past president of the NAIA, said it had been a privilege to serve in the role.
“I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, and I look forward to supporting Stephanie and Ben as they lead the association into its next chapter,” said George.
Strong momentum
NAIA executive director Bradley George said: “Announcing our new board during the conference reflects the strong engagement and momentum we saw throughout last week.
“NAIA’s directors bring deep experience from across the sector, and their leadership will guide our work on responsible growth, regulatory engagement, and public understanding. I look forward to working closely with Stephanie, Ben, and the full board in the year ahead.”
Cathy Follett, business manager for halibut and wolffish farmer Amar Seafood Canada, continues as NAIA board treasurer and mussel farmer Laura Halfyard will continue as secretary. All other board members remain in their roles, with Sheldon George continuing as a director.
