Salmon stolen from a processing facility in Norway has been found in a stolen articulated lorry trailer parked up at a petrol station.

Processor 1814 Salmon reported that 18 tonnes of salmon worth around NOK 1.4 million (£112,000) had been stolen from its facility in Dal, close to Oslo Airport, in a burglary at the weekend.

Late on Sunday, police received a report of the theft of two articulated lorry trailers that had been stolen from nearby Skarnes during the night. At least one of them was observed at a service station in Vestby, around 110 kilometres southwest of Skarnes, and a patrol was dispatched to the scene.

The trailer turned out to be one of those that had been stolen, and had false registration plates attached.

In addition, it turned out that the trailer was loaded with the salmon from the theft at 1814 Salmon.

A man was sleeping in the artic cab, and was arrested.

“The arrested person is a man in his sixties from Eastern Europe. He is being taken into custody and will be questioned later,” police recorded in their log.

The owners of both the fish and the trailer has been notified, police say.

Huge values

1814 Salmon was launched by the Norwegian salmon farmers Kvaroy Salmon and Fram Seafood, and the investment company Nyhamn, in autumn 2022, to process and pack salmon for export from Oslo Airport.

The company’s general manager Alf-Gøran Knutsen, who is also chief executive of Kvaroy Salmon, describes the theft as very serious.

“These are huge values. It's absolutely insane,” Knutsen told VG after the theft was discovered.

“[The burglary] must have been done by someone who knows what they are doing and who knew what to look for.”
