According to Romerikes Blad, a total of 18 tonnes of salmon were stolen from the facility on Sunday night.

“They told us that they had been the victim of a burglary and that 18 tonnes of salmon had been stolen,” the newspaper was told by Kristian Nordby, task force leader in the Eastern Police District.

Police responded to the scene on Sunday morning and conducted a crime scene investigation. The salmon is estimated to be worth around NOK 1.4 million (£112,000).

1814 Salmon was launched by the Norwegian salmon farmers Kvaroy Salmon and Fram Seafood, and the investment company Nyhamn, in autumn 2022.

'It's insane'

The company’s general manager Alf-Gøran Knutsen, who is also chief executive of Kvaroy Salmon, describes the incident as very serious.

“These are huge values. It's absolutely insane,” Knutsen tells VG.

He says the theft appears planned.

“It must have been done by someone who knows what they are doing and who knew what to look for,” he says.

Police say they have secured video surveillance from the scene and have opened an investigation.

1814 Salmon general manager Alf-Gøran Knutsen says the thief or thieves escaped with a high-value haul.
