Scots producer steps up traceability

The Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) has become the first salmon producer in the UK to secure full GGN licensing – thus joining an international consumer labelling scheme which guarantees the quality and provenance of its products.

GGN labels enable consumers to identify products raised in Global GAP certified farms. Each label carries a 13-digit identification number which consumers can enter at www.ggn.org to find out about where the product was raised, providing full traceability and transparency. Information on the farms and their good practices are detailed on the site.

SSC, which farms on Scotland’s west coast and Hebrides, has been Global GAP certified since 2008.

Craig Anderson, SSC’s Managing Director, said: “Provenance and traceability are of increasing importance to consumers and are paramount to our business. Securing the right to use GGN labelling on our salmon provides even further reassurance of the premium quality of our Scottish salmon to our customers and consumers.

“By managing every stage of the production process, from broodstock through freshwater and marine farming to harvesting and packaging, as well as sales and marketing, we can ensure complete supply chain integrity, premium quality and full traceability."

“By introducing the GGN label and portal, we want to make it easier for consumers to find products from certified aquaculture, simply by searching for ‘Aquaculture with GGN’,” added Global GAP’s CEO, Dr Kristian Moeller.
