The lack of growth in salmon volumes resulted in very high prices during 2016.

Price drop predicted

A leading analyst of the salmon market, Swedbank’s Marius Gaard, predicts that prices for Norwegian salmon are going to drop to around NOK 55/kg – a price he sees as suiting both producers and consumers.

Salmon prices rose by almost 4 kroner last week, closing at close to 60 kroner/kg, according to the latest edition of Akvafakta.

However, according to Gaard this was expected.

“There are many holidays in May, therefore not many offers,” he told kyst.no this morning.

And he is not discounting the possibility of prices approaching the 70 kroner mark, although he says, that May is likely to be the peak.

“If it does not happen the next two weeks, it would be unlikely that the price would rise further. Full harvest weeks and more volume throughout the summer will lead to lower prices,” predicts the analyst.

“I think prices are going to remain good, and better than many think. But will probably slide down towards 55 kroner – a level that both producers and consumers are happy with,” said Gaard.
