The centre, which is located in Souris, Prine Edward Island (PEI) opened its doors for people to view the facilities, including the brand new, state-of-the-art AQC3 biocontainment labs. Attendees were greeted by the 21 employees, dined on locally grown Colville Bay oysters and smoked Atlantic salmon, and learned about the type of research being conducted in the centre - once a fish processing plant owned by Ocean Choice International.

Fish Farming Expert attended the open house and had a chance to speak with with the Vice President of Research, Dr Debbie Plouffe.

"We are excited to celebrate the grand opening of our facility in Souris including the recently certified biosafety level three containment area," said Plouffe.

CATC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Centre for Aquaculture Technologies, which is based in San Diego.

Twenty-one people work at the centre — about half from PEI. The company hopes to have at least 30 employees by the end of 2017.

There are about 10 different projects currently ongoing in fish nutrition and in fish health, while the centre also conducts its own internal research.

"We look forward to expanding our business into international markets and to contributing to the reputation of Prince Edward Island as a centre for excellence in the field of aquaculture research," Plouffe said.
