Dutch speciality ingredients manufacturer Royal DSM today launched a digital version of its SalmoFan colour measurement system that is widely used throughout the global salmon industry to measure fillet colour.

DSM’s products include the feed ingredient Carophyll, a range of carotenoid additives which allow producers to deliver precisely coloured and pigmented food. Carotenoids are also vital antioxidants and vitamin A precursors.

The company said the Digital SalmoFan, which will be available to companies globally across the salmon industry value chain, further highlights its commitment as the industry leader in colour measurement tools.

Digital SalmoFan features include:

  • Portable, compact, and easy to use anywhere, without any light interference.
  • Objective and accurate measurements expressed as a SalmoFan score – the globally accepted standard colour metric.
  • Bluetooth connection to smartphones and tablets, generating a SalmoFan score on the screen.
  • The Digital SalmoFan app, which can gather, store, and share data collected from colour measurements.
  • Benedict Standen, head of global aqua marketing at DSM, said: “In DSM, we are committed to unleashing the power of aquaculture by delivering innovative science-backed solutions for optimum nutrition and health. The Digital SalmoFan enables the industry to maximize the value of colour, providing a credible, reliable, and consistent reference point across the value chain.”
