Hatch seeking start-ups for first Asian programme

Aquaculture investor Hatch is seeking applications for its first Asian start-up programme, due to begin in May.

The Asian Aquaculture Innovation Studio is open to researchers, inventors, entrepreneurs or small or medium enterprises in aquaculture or adjacent industries with a great idea, project, or technology, said Hatch.

Hatch, headquartered in Bergen, has invested in and scaled up more than 30 aquaculture and alternative seafood start-ups in the past three years.

The company set up an office in Singapore in 2019 to identify and work with promising Asian innovators in the aquaculture and alternative seafood space.

‘Some 89 per cent of global aquaculture production is located in Asia, and Southeast Asia is already the fifth largest economy in the world,’ said Hatch.

‘As the market continues to grow, we are looking for the best aquaculture and alternative seafood ideas to develop and scale into viable businesses.’

Commercial scalability

The Asian initiative, supported by Startup SG, offers participants the opportunity to develop their project’s commercial scalability, technological readiness, and industry fit.

They will also have access to a global network of aquaculture industry experts and be shown how to pitch for investment and talk to customers successfully.

The programme runs from May 4 to June 11, 2021, for two days a week, and there will be both virtual sessions and physical meetings, Covid permitting, at Hatch’s office in Singapore.

The innovation studio is limited to 10 teams or projects and the deadline for applications is April 8.
