Record number of lice treatments in Norway in 2020

The number of reported treatments for salmon lice reached a record high in Norway last year, an analysis of statistics reveals.

Published Last updated

Norsk Fiskeoppdrett (Norwegian Fish Farming) magazine concluded that there was a nearly 21% increase in the number of reported lice treatments in 2020, compared with 2019. The number of reports rose by 659 from 3,195 in 2019 to 3,854 last year.

Almost all of the increase was accounted for by extra mechanical treatments, which have become the dominant means for treating lice.

The number of mechanical treatments increased by 638 to 3,854, the highest ever. The number of reported in-feed treatments and bath treatments also increased, by 18 and three respectively.

Probably there have never been more lice in total, wrote Norsk Fiskeoppdrett editor Pål Mugaas Jensen.

More detail will be published in the first 2021 edition of the magazine (out soon, subscription required), which is owned by Fish Farming Expert’s publisher, Oceanspace Media AS (formerly Salmonview Media).

The research drills down to the active substance level and looks at the development of lice and the temperature development in the sea in the different parts of Norway since 2002.
