
US salmon imports have continuously decreased
Last year, the global Atlantic salmon exports totalized US$ 1,891 million. Norway was the largest exporter of this species (37%), followed by Iceland (13%) and Canada (9%). Likewise, USA was the largest market for Atlantic salmon (50%), followed by France (16%) and the UK (11%).
According to a report produced by the Chilean American Chamber of Commerce, Atlantic salmon imports in USA totalized US$ 611.3 million in 2010, confirming continuity in the negative trend shown by salmon imports in that market, with an average decrease of -5.6% over the past four years.
Norway was the largest supplier of Atlantic salmon to the US market in 2010 (39%), followed by Chile (38%) and Canada (13%).
Regarding Chile, this report explains that the Chilean exports of Atlantic salmon totalized around US$ 205 million last year. That production was mainly exported to USA, Mexico and Canada, countries that together account for 96% of the Chilean exports of Atlantic salmon.
Meanwhile, the main destinations in US for those Chilean exports were: Florida (73%), Georgia (14%), California (9%) and New York (1.5%).
