Carlos Odebret, general manager of the Association of the Chilean Salmon Industry (SalmonChile), reported that two salmon processing plants are not operating in the region "producing a halt in the economic activity within this area," he said. These two processing plants belong to Acuinova and Salmones Friosur.

Likewise, he commented that some freshwater and sea water sites are currently isolated and, therefore, shifts of workers have not been changed while supplies and inputs have not been provided in those facilities," he added.

He also said that the salmon industry knows what is to operate in Aysén, hence, this sector is aware of the need for comprehensive solutions to the historic demands generated in the region.

According to the newspaper Santiago Times, among the issues the citizens want addressed are the high cost of fuel, poor public education, poor infrastructure, poor health services, and employment equity in the region. The National Workers Union (CUT) and the National Association of Public Employees (ANEF) also seek greater stability for civil servants, and Patagonia Sin Represas wants greater citizen participation on environmental issues relating to the proposed dam construction (HidroAysén).
