Supplements can't match natural seafood
The announcement was made in response to an article in the Daily Mail on Calamari Gold, a supplement made from squid that claims to contain up to four times as much omega-3 DHA as traditional Cod Liver Oil capsules.
According to a Seafish statement: “Whilst supplements may provide high levels of omega-3, there are plenty of other essential nutrients and vitamins you get from eating seafood which a supplement will not provide. Depending on which species you eat, seafood can also provide vitamin D, B vitamins, selenium, iodine, iron – the list goes on. Not forgetting that it's a high source of protein which many people still do not get enough of and our view is that it is much healthier to get in to the habit of eating balanced diet than remembering to take a supplement each day.
“It's also not as expensive as you may think to get your recommended two portions of seafood a week - certainly more economical than a month's worth of Calamari Gold. Herring and mackerel are the best sources of omega-3 and can both be purchased in a can for those looking to include seafood on a budget. Popular white fish such as cod, coley and hake are also sources of omega-3 for those who prefer a simpler taste.
