Returns from salmon export totalized US$ 1,428 million FOB Chile in this period. According to the Association of the Chilean Salmon Industry (SalmonChile), these improved results respond to increased Atlantic salmon and Coho salmon exports to the US and Japan, respectively.

The general manager of SalmonChile, Carlos Odebret, stressed that these results reflect a low comparison base in 2010 and foresees a progressive recovery in the industry. “It is important for this growth to be accompanied with environmental, sanitary and social sustainability. These are the main lines in the new programmatic agenda of SalmonChile for the next three years,” he said.

In the first half-year of 2011, the largest market for Chilean salmon and trout was Japan with 88,148 net tones worth US$ 604 million, and followed by the US with 29,231 net tones worth US$ 328 million and Brazil with 19,631 net tones worth US$ 141 million.

The most exported salmonid species in the period were: Rainbow trout (73,271 net tonnes), Coho salmon (60,511 net tonnes), Atlantic salmon (52,604 net tonnes) and King salmon (687 net tonnes).
