Selonda UK in talks over problems

Published Modified

The Welsh Government is involved in trying to resolve “difficulties” at Selonda UK, which runs the fish farm at Dinmor Quarry, Penmon, according to Daily Post North Wales

Workers claim they have not been paid this month, although this has not been confirmed by the company.

It is understood a buyer is being sought for the business, which employs around 25 staff.

The difficulties have sparked fears over the wellbeing of thousands of fish at the farm, which produces 1,000 tons of sea bass every year, the news source reported

Aeration of the water is required, as fish need enough oxygen for growth.

The Welsh Government is monitoring the situation, and The Environment Agency is working with the company over potential pollution concerns if operations were ceased.

The company arrived on Anglesey back in 2002, backed by £840,000 in Euro grants and it is understood they have received significant further public cash from the Welsh Government.

Just last August the Business Minister Edwina Hart and Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Food and Fisheries Alun Davies approved a payment to the company for “securing a permanent solution to the electrical supply to Pen Mon Fish farm”.
