Sea-based closed containment launched
Aqua Dome is Norway's first certified closed containment system for use at sea. It has a diameter of 27 metres and is completely sealed. Cermaq will be among the first to try out the new technology.
"This autumn we will start the installation of the first one. It is mounted upside down by large sections made of composite, and then turned in the water when it is finished," explains Cermaq Norway's production manager for the county of Nordland, Truls Hansen.
The pen system works by intake of water under the cage. Depending on the depth obtained the temperature can thus be constant throughout the year. It will hopefully provide greater growth and better utilization, and could confine lice and escapes to history.
If the waste is taken care of, it will negate the need for site rotations and fallowing. Theoretically such facilities can also be placed almost anywhere.
"Initially, we acquired one such Aqua Dome, but if it turns out that the answer to the expectations we will of course consider acquiring more . The concept opens up new ideas in farming, especially if one takes care of the waste. But they are expensive," says Hansen.
