The Scot Trout managing director Muir Hunter confirmed the deal in the newspaper Aberdeen Press and Journal, and said it would create a £70million-a-year Scottish business. He also told the newspaper that jobs would be safe following the Dawnfresh takeover.

The value of the deal and the amounts going to Scot Trout’s seven shareholders were not disclosed.

Scot Trout was established in November 1983. It was Britain’s first co-operative of farmed trout producers, and was a direct response to a lack of co-ordination in the market and recognition of the growing dominance of the supermarkets in the food chain. Today, Scot Trout is the UK’s leading trout processor. It processes about 8,000 tonnes of fish a year and meets around 80% of the UK’s demand for trout. It has a fish smoking and marinating operations, and also handles and distributes other food products. Scot Trout’s farming subsidiary operates from numerous Scottish locations. Customers have included major retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury and Tesco.
