Rodrigo Infante, general manager of SalmonChile for more than a decade, knows the salmon industry inside and out and is well prepared to speak in representation of his employers. In an interview with la Estrategia, Infante gave his viewpoint of how the year should close for the national salmon industry and what lies ahead in 2008. Looking at the big picture the total sales for this year should reach US$ 2.5 billion with a total volume of 648 thousand tons. The price for the second semester has declined from the first semester. “But we are in the high part of the price cycle, and there is always fluctuation,” states Infante. With respect to how the ISA disease has impacted the industry, Infante recognizes that the risk of the disease reaching the Aysén Region is present but not yet apparent, and adds “the industry has taken the measures necessary to maintain the situation at a certain point. If a farm site is screened positive the fish are immediately eliminated from the infected cage.” And as for what is expected for 2008, a continued 8% growth is expected, reaching 700 thousand tons and US$ 2.6 billion in sales.
