Roe imports reverse downward trend
The Chilean salmon industry imported 9.80 million eggs in January 2015, representing a 21.7 per cent increase compared to the 8.05 million eggs imported in the same month of 2014.
According to a report recently published by the National Fisheries Service (Sernapesca), Chile imported 7.40 million Atlantic salmon eggs last month, representing a 335.29 per cent increase compared to the 1.70 million eggs imported in the same month of 2014.
On the other hand, only 2.40 million rainbow trout eggs were imported in the first month of the year - a 62.2 per cent decrease compared to the 6.35 million eggs imported in January 2014.
Regarding the supplier countries of those eggs, Atlantic salmon roe imports came from Iceland and rainbow trout roe imports from Denmark in the first month of this year, just like in 2014.
The Chilean salmon industry imported nearly 300 million eggs in 2007 and 2008 but has since been gradually reducing those imports to about 100 million in 2010, less than 50 million by 2013 and barely over 40 million in 2014.
