Regulation that limits salmon production to be implemented this year
As a response to some salmon producing companies which see a delay in the implementation of new sanitary and environmental regulations, José Miguel Burgos, chief of the Aquaculture Division in Subpesca, rejects these opinions.
"We do not share that vision, as we believe that the only pending and important regulation is that one regarding farming densities. It is quite complex and requires a lot of evaluation not only biologically, but also environmentally and economically," Burgos said.
He further explained that this regulation would be implemented before the end of this year.
According to the financial journal Diario Financiero, this regulation seeks to limit production in certain groups of concessions. In fact, it will be referred to those areas which experience some degree of health risk but in no case it means establishing quotas as in the case of fisheries. The idea is to establish safeguards against inordinate growth of the salmon.
Moreover, because of this regulation, individual performance will be important but group performance will be important too. Otherwise, there is a risk of returning to the previous production model with similar production levels to those experienced just before the ISA virus crisis.
