Record breaking productivity in Chile

Based on information prepared by Kontali Analyse, the general manager of the roe supplier company Sealand Aquaculture, Óscar Gárate, commented that the Chilean salmon industry obtained an average of around 3.5kg of fish per smolt between the years 2001 and 2006; in 2007, this average decreased below 2.5kg of fish per smolt; and this value was reduced even more in 2008 and 2009, below 2.0kg of fish per smolt . This figure is closely tied to the mortality rate and sanitary condition in Chilean farms those years.

Last year, this average was close to 3.5kg of fish per smolt again; and this year, this index has maintained its increase up to 4.5kg of fish per smolt, reflecting the improved sanitary conditions within the Chilean salmon industry.

By contrast, the Norwegian salmon industry has obtained more steady results, of close to 3.5kg of fish per smolt between the years 2001 and 2004; and around 4.0kg of fish per smolt between 2005 and 2010.

Another production index closely related to this one is the average harvest gross weight, which in the case of Atlantic salmon has increased in Chile from around 3,700grs in the years 2008 and 2009 up to 5,000grs in the years 2010 and 2011.
