Production levels don't meet predictions
As the first major salmon farming company in British Columbia to provide an update on production volumes and earnings for the last quarter of 2014, Marine Harvest recently reported that it sold some 7,000 tonnes of salmon here during Q4 2014 - slightly less than the 7,052 tonnes produced in the previous quarter, but fully 2,000 tonnes less than what was guided in the Q3 report. Overall, however, the company harvested a total of 105,000 tonnes during Q4, compared with a previous guiding of 100,000 tonnes (70,000 from Norway, 6,000 from Scotland, 7,000 from BC and 17,000 from farms in Chile. The balance of production came from other countries). Marine Harvest Canada plans to harvest 37,000 tonnes of Atlantic salmon from its farms in 2015.
Without considering currency fluctuations of late - some of which have been quite dramatic - Marine Harvest Canada saw a drop in its operational EBIT of NOK 1.0 (~€ 0.114 at today’s rate) during Q4 2014 - from NOK 4.70 to NOK 3.70. The corresponding numbers for the same two quarters for the company’s production in other countries were:
| Norway | Scotland | Chile |
Operational EBIT, NOK/kg Q3 ‘14 | 9.71 | 9.95 | 6.06 |
Operational EBIT, NOK/kg Q4 ’14 | 12.6 | -3.4 | 0.4 |
Guidance for volume, 2015, tonnes | 263,000 | 63,000 | 55,000 |
