The Tory politician, a number of whose constituents are facing an uncertain employment future, brought the matter up in Prime Minister’s Questions at Westminster today, where he not only secured an agreement to meet personally – along with Grimsby’s Labour MP Melanie Onn – with David Cameron, but also heard that the Prime Minister was considering dipping in to the Regional Growth Fund in order to bolster the fortunes of the famous Lincolnshire port.

Opening the Parliamentary showpiece, Mr Vickers, said: “It’s particularly disappointing after a run of good news and much investment has been attracted via the Regional Growth Fund – could my right honourable friend assure me that perhaps additional growth and support may be given through the RGF, because it’s important to retain Young’s presence in the area?”

The request was one that the Prime Minister appeared to be receptive to and he stated: “The recent reports surrounding Young’s are concerning and I know this will be a difficult time for employees and their families. The company will be talking to employees and the government stands ready to assist in any way that it can.”

Given that Young’s Seafood is the largest employer in the area, it is little wonder it is a matter of great concern.
