Last March the newly formed company FyS Chile invested US$13.3 million in the construction of a state of the art mussel processing plant in Chiloé, and invited the Italian seafood distribution giant PanaPesca to partake in 25% of the project. The plant consists of over 15 thousand m2 with a production capacity of 13 tons per hour, and a projected 55 thousand tons per year. The export markets will be primarily Europe, the U.S. and Southeast Asia. According to a news release in Aqua.cl, the president and owner of PanaPesca, Vito Panati stated that the company is now able to guarantee a steady supply of high quality mussel products for the European market and optimize its distribution chain. As for invesment in salmon, Panati expressed that he hasn’t decided exactly how he would enter the salmon farming sector, but he finds it a very interesting enterprise and is considering acquiring a local company when the opportunity arises.
