MH considers new processing options
Scotland’s largest salmon producer has applied to the Highland Council for planning permission to convert the old mill into a processing plant – a move that is hardly surprising given that the company is already processing 10 times more salmon at their nearby Blar Mhor site than they were back in 1987 when it opened and are also planning to expand their production in the coming years.
Steve Bracken, the company’s Business Support Manager, explains: “Corpach, near Fort William is one of a number of site options we’re looking at to expand our salmon processing facilities. This application is only for a screening opinion, essentially to find out what would be required should we decide to take matters a step further.
“The existing processing plant at Blar Mhor was originally built in 1987 for a throughput of 5,000 tonnes and in recent times it’s been processing 50,000 tonnes. With our expansion in freshwater and seawater production we need to have a new processing plant that can deal with an even higher throughput. The timescale for building this new plant would be four to five years in the future so it is still very early days.”
