Online sea lice conference begins today

An online sea lice conference hosted by the Faroe Islands begins this afternoon with a series of presentations on the topic of Host and parasite biology: keys for control.

The three-day online event is free and is being held to fill in the gap between the 12th Sealice Conference International in Patagonia, Chile in 2018 and the Covid-delayed 13th edition in Torshavn, Faroes in May next year.

The conference begins at 2pm BST with an opening address by Magnus Rasmussen, the Faroe Islands’ Minister for Aquaculture and Industry.

The talks are:

  • “How not to get infected – a salmon’s eye view”, by Ian Bricknell, PhD, Professor of Aquaculture Biology, Aquaculture Research Institute & School of Marine Sciences, University of Maine, USA;
  • “Parasite evolution in response to treatment pressures, drug resistance and others”, by Dr Armin Sturm, senior lecturer, Institute of Aquaculture, University of Stirling, Scotland;
  • “Host immunity and host subversion by sea lice”, by Laura Braden, PhD, program lead, fish health and molecular biology, AquaBounty Canada, and:
  • “Empirical investigation of pelagic sea lice”, by Gunnvør á Norði, Biologist, PhD, head of department, Fiskaaling, Faroe Islands.

A panel discussion will follow.

Tomorrow’s topic is Environmental impacts and societal responsibility, and Thursday’s is Expanding options for integrated pest management: improved tools for a sustainable future. Both sets of presentations also begin at 2pm BST. Each session is expected to last around two hours.
