Salmon firm’s F&D sector support
The Scottish Salmon Company (SSC) is backing a pioneering initiative that aims to attract talented youngsters to Scotland’s food and drink industry.
SSC, which produces approximately 20% of Scotland’s total salmon output, has joined the Scottish Food and Drink Federation’s (SFDF) Food and Drink Ambassadors Network.
The programme aims to inspire young people to consider a career in food and drink by recruiting a network of volunteers from across the industry to host site visits, run classroom workshops and help school-based career sessions.
So far 10 members of SSC staff from across the company’s sites have been trained to bring their day-to-day industry experiences to schools and colleges. The training is delivered in conjunction with the Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics Network (STEMNET).
Craig Anderson, Managing Director at SSC, said: “We are passionate about our business and nurturing new talent, but recognise that not enough young people are aware of the wide and varied career opportunities available across the industry.
“Our staff will be able to share their own experiences while at the same time highlighting the sector’s innovative nature and the exciting and diverse job opportunities available.”
The initiative has now attracted close to 300 Ambassadors from across Scotland.
David Thomson, CEO of SFDF, said: “The Ambassadors from The Scottish Salmon Company are excellent role models for young people considering a career in food and drink. They demonstrate the wide range of opportunities available in the industry, including site management, HR and sales and marketing. When engaging with their local schools the Ambassadors will be able to use their day-to-day experiences to bring food and drink careers to life, explaining the benefits the sector has to offer the next generation of workforce.”
