Commonly known as yellowtail tuna, or yellowtail jack tuna, the fish is highly prized on the sashimi market. For the past two years with help from the government, the Universidad de Antofagasta has maintained in captivity a stock of wild caught specimens, which have demonstrated the feasibility of reproduction in captivity and adequate growth rates. The families Elton and Lacamara recently formed the company Acuícola del Norte and plan to have in operation this year a grow-out farm near the town of Caldera, in Region III. According to La Estrategia, the company expects its first harvest in 2009, totaling approximately 500 tons in volume and US$ 5 million in sales. The company plans to reach 5,000 tons by 2014.
