Volume of Chilean exports increased 26.7% in 2012

The volume of Chilean salmon exports totalized 488,124 net tonnes in 2012, representing a 26.67 percent increase compared to the 385,325 net tonnes shipped by the sector during the previous year.

According to figures published by the Association of the Chilean Salmon Industry SalmonChile, the main destination markets for the local exports of salmon and trout were (in terms of volume), Japan (196,188 net tonnes, 40 percent of the total), United States (105,937 net tonnes, 22 percent of the total) and Brazil (67,604 net tonnes, 14 percent of total).

In turn, the most exported species were Atlantic salmon with 47 percent of the total volume (227,519 net tonnes), trout with 29 percent (141,275 net tonnes) and Coho salmon with 24 percent (119,330 net tonnes).

Cristián Moreno, general manager of SalmonChile, commented that "the demand for salmon in all markets will continue to grow as the world population needs more protein and salmon holds remarkable advantages given its nutritional benefits and versatility in consumption".

He added that "we will continue building brand value in both traditional and emerging markets, such as China and Brazil. In the latter, we hope to continue with ProChile in our marketing campaign".
