U.S. is buying more smoked salmon
Last year the sales of Chilean smoked salmon to the U.S. couldn’t have been better - or so the salmon producers thought – having exported a total of 897 tons with earnings of US$ 10 million even before the last four months of the year. But in 2007 the sales were indeed better, and by August of this year Chile’s smoked salmon exports reached 1,107 tons with sales reaching US$ 14 million; which equates to a 25% increase in volume and a 40% increase in sales. According to a report from Aqua.cl, the total U.S. imports of smoked salmon from January to August of this year have reached 2,369 tons, generating US$ 28 million in sales. This is a 27% increase in sales numbers compared to the same period last year. Besides Chile, the other countries exporting smoked salmon to the U.S. are the Netherlands with 929 tons and sales of US$ 10 million, and Canada with 95 tons and sales of US$ 1.3 million.
